Claude Pro Price in India 2026: Every Plan in Rupees, the UPI Problem, and Whether It Is Actually Cheaper

If you have been paying for Claude in US dollars and absorbing a bank forex fee on top, that friction just got smaller.

Anthropic quietly rolled out Indian rupee pricing for Claude on July 13, 2026 — and Indian users are now starting to see INR plans directly on Claude's website and mobile apps. No more guessing what your final bill will look like after currency conversion and GST.

But there is a catch. Actually, two of them.

The rupee prices are not cheaper than US prices — they are slightly more expensive. And UPI, the payment method most Indian users actually want, is still not supported.

Here is everything you need to know before you subscribe.

Why Did Anthropic Do This Now?

India is not a small market for Anthropic. According to the company's own data, India accounts for 5.8% of total global Claude usage — making it Anthropic's second-largest market after the United States.

That is a significant number for a product that was only available in dollar pricing until now. Indian users were paying in USD, absorbing 18% GST on international digital services, and adding 1.5% to 3.5% in bank forex markup on top of that. The actual cost was always higher than the listed dollar price — users just had to calculate it themselves.

Anthropic has also been building its India presence seriously. The company opened a Bengaluru office in February 2026, appointed former Microsoft India managing director Irina Ghose to lead its India operations, and signed enterprise partnerships with Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services. Rupee pricing is the next logical step.

The move also comes after a rocky period — Anthropic suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-US users in June 2026, which pushed some Indian developers toward alternatives. The Fable 5 ban has since been lifted, though Mythos 5 access remains restricted outside the US.

You get five times the usage limits of the free plan, plus Research mode, unlimited projects, memory across conversations, file uploads, web search, voice mode, Claude Code, Claude Design, and Microsoft 365 integrations including Excel and PowerPoint.

Claude Max

Claude Max comes in two variants based on usage ceiling.

Max 20x (monthly)₹23,999/month~₹19,000/month ($200)

Max subscribers get higher output limits, priority access during high-traffic periods, and earlier access to advanced Claude features. If you regularly hit Pro limits — heavy coding, research, or daily long-context work — Max is where you move next.

Claude Team

Team plans are for organizations with 5 to 150 users and include centralized billing, single sign-on, enterprise search, and controls for connectors and tools.

PlanAnnual (per seat)Monthly (per seat)
Team Standard₹2,399/month₹2,999/month
Team Premium₹11,999/month₹14,999/month

Team Standard gives more usage than Claude Pro. Team Premium gives five times the usage of Team Standard — the highest ceiling available outside Enterprise.

Free Plan

The free tier continues as before with no cost. It includes web, desktop, iOS, and Android access with tools for writing, editing, coding, web search, file creation, and data visualization, subject to usage limits.

Are the India Prices Actually Cheaper?

This is the first thing everyone wants to know — and the answer is no, not exactly.

The rupee prices include GST, which is the biggest practical benefit. You see the final number upfront without doing conversion math or absorbing surprise tax charges later. That is genuine relief.

But the base prices themselves are higher than their US equivalents. A Claude Pro subscriber in India on an annual plan pays ₹2,000 per month — about $21 at current exchange rates. A US subscriber pays $17 per month on the same annual plan. That is roughly 24% more expensive for the same product.

Anthropic is not alone in this — OpenAI's ChatGPT India pricing also sits above US pricing. But it is worth being clear about what "local pricing" actually means here. It means INR billing and GST transparency. It does not mean a locally adjusted price that reflects Indian purchasing power.

The UPI Problem

This is the biggest missing piece in Anthropic's India rollout.

Paying for Claude in India currently requires a credit or debit card, or going through Apple or Google's app store billing. UPI — which handles billions of transactions a month in India and is how most Indians prefer to pay for digital subscriptions — is not supported.

This matters because a significant portion of Indian users who want Claude but have avoided it due to dollar friction are in the segment most likely to use UPI. Students, freelancers, and small businesses that do not have international cards are still locked out.

OpenAI already rolled out UPI support when it introduced ChatGPT's rupee pricing. Anthropic is a step behind on this front, and it is a meaningful gap in a price-sensitive market where payment convenience often decides whether someone subscribes or walks away.

ChatGPT Plus in India is priced lower than Claude Pro, and it supports UPI. For price-sensitive users, that difference matters. For users who specifically prefer Claude's quality on coding, research, or long-document tasks — the premium may still be worth it.

How to Subscribe to Claude in India Right Now

Getting started is straightforward once you know which plan fits your use case.

Step 1 — Go to Claude's official website

Visit claude.ai and sign in to your existing account or create a new one.

Who Should Actually Pay for Claude Pro Right Now?

Not everyone needs a paid plan. Here is a quick way to think about it.

Stick with the free plan if you use Claude occasionally for writing, editing, or quick questions. The free tier covers most casual use cases.

Upgrade to Claude Pro if you hit usage limits regularly, do coding or research work daily, want access to Claude Code and Claude Design, or need file uploads and web search without limits.

Look at Claude Max if you are a developer or researcher running long sessions, working with large documents, or need priority access when Claude is busy.

Consider Team plans if you are running a small team and want centralized billing, SSO, and higher per-seat usage across the group.
